塞曼效应,是在磁场下,原子光谱出现分裂和偏振现象。

反常塞曼效应,是在很弱的磁场下,原子光谱还会有微小的分裂现象。

1926年,古德斯密特提出了电子自旋的概念,以此来解释反常塞曼效应,电子自旋,就是电子像个陀螺一样可以自我旋转。

乌伦贝克怀疑道:“反常塞曼效应,可以用多种理论解释,你为何独独旋转了要把电子当做自转的陀螺呢?”

古德斯密特说:“我受到泡利的启发,他认为不相容,就表示一个轨道不能出现两个状态相同的电子,那么这个状态的不同,也就是两种了,而电子的形状是圆的,所以只能认为是它可以做自转,电子为何不能自转呢?”

乌伦贝克说:“那就更加奇怪了,为什么只有两种自转呢?”

古德斯密特也觉得难以说清,叹气说:“因为反常的光谱只出现了两种,所以要有多种,那光谱就极其复杂了。”

乌伦贝克说:“你的意思是,要让电子有两个固定的相反在状态,来解释不相容和反常塞曼原理吗?”

古德斯密特说:“没错,只有这两天,也是一种量子化特征,因为它不是无数种。”

“而且,电子自转可以产生磁场,有磁场的力量,当然汇总塞曼效应下反常了。”

乌伦贝克说:“听起来像是这样的道理,只不过电子的自转方式,让人难以接受。”

1926年,他们用电子自旋的概念解释塞曼效应和氢原子光谱的精细结构。自旋是描述原子中电子状态的第四个量子数。

两个人写了文章发出去,被洛伦兹看到了,洛伦兹自己计算了电子的转速,发现电子表面超光速。因为超光速违反相对论的根基,所以两个人慌了。

两个人感觉找老师艾伦费斯,要求撤掉文章,老师笑说:“年轻人犯点错误,不算啥大事儿。”

爱因斯坦看到之后,很喜欢电子旋转的力量,而且还安慰两个人说:“存粹是量子概念,不能用经典物理学的旋转去解释,所以也不存在超光速的问题。”
