后来盖拉赫和施特恩两个人做了一个实验。

使银原子在电炉内蒸发射出,通过狭缝S1、S2形成细束,经过一个抽成真空的不均匀的磁场区域,磁场垂直于射束方向,最后到达照相底片上。显像后的底片上出现了两条黑斑,表示银原子经过不均匀磁场区域时分成了两束。

两个人惊奇,怎么电子在不均匀磁场不会分成一片,那是因为电子的速度都严格相等,那为什么会分成两段?是因为有两种不同电荷?

后来的直到1925年G.乌伦贝克和S.古兹密特提出电子自旋的假设,实验结果才得到了全面的解释。

后来外尔提出外尔旋量。外尔张量的旋量形式是由旋量ψABCD所决定的,后者对所有指标都是对称的。

在坐标变换下不变的量被称为标量,在坐标变换下按照标记固定方向变化的量被称为矢量。由多个矢量可以耦合出含有更多分量,在坐标变换下级次更高的量,被统称为张量。

以上这些量虽然在坐标方向选择不一样时,其具体数值可能不同,但是他们表示的总是某种固定的物理量。

他们数值上的变化只是由于不得不选择坐标而带来的,只是对坐标选择的依赖而已,而不是物理量本身的变化。

标量,矢量和张量具有本身不变,分量的具体数值可能随坐标转动而变化这样的性质。

但是他们并没有包含所有具有这种性质的量。

具有这种性质的最基本的物理量是旋量。

旋量具有四个分量,在坐标转动下,由某些特定的矩阵决定自己各分量数值应有的变化。

我们的物理时空具有洛仑兹变换下不变的性质。

根据洛仑兹变换群的性质,旋量才是4维时空中能够构造出来的最基本的方向依赖的量。

物理量与坐标方向的依赖级次可以由对应的角动量来表示,旋量为1/2,矢量1。两个旋量可以耦合出矢量,更多的旋量可以耦合出对应角动量3/2的量,对应整数角动量的张量等。

外尔把群论引入到量子力学进行研究。

外尔也提出了规范场论。
